Roger Federer books spot in semis

Roger booked his spot in the semis in Madrid today, defeating Ernests Gulbis (ATP 34) 3-6, 6-1, 6-4.

It was quite a fight between the two players today, as Gulbis took an immediate service break from our champ. And with Roger simply committing too many forehand errors, the Latvian was able to hold on to the break to take a one-set lead.

The start of the second set proved no better for Roger as he once again started off by dropping his serve. Roger was not rattled, though, gaining the break back immediately and from that point in the match on, playing the tennis we love. He cruised through the set to level the match at a set a piece. He contined in just the same fashion and scored an early break in the third, giving him enough room to finally take home the match.

“I think it’s one of the toughest things in tennis if you lose against a player and you have to play against him in the next couple of weeks,” Federer said. “I was very happy with the way I was able to return and mix up the game a bit, and at the end I thought it was a really great performance.”

Roger will play ninth-seeded David Ferrer on Saturday, who beat 2008 champion Andy Murray 7-5, 6-3.
