Roger cruises through and qualifies for ATP World Tour Finals

Roger showed a strong and entertaining performance in the first round of the US Open, defeating Argentine Brian Dabul 6-1, 6-4 and 6-2.

"I've never lost night sessions. I feel very much at home here," Roger said. "I always come out and played some good tennis here over the years. I've been in six straight finals. I would like to go there again this year. The path is long and rough, we'll see how it goes. I'm excited to be back and playing well."

Roger has yet to lose a night session in Flushing meadows (stat: 16-0). It took him two games to definitely find his way into the match, but he was all in after that. Roger blasted 18 aces to none for Dabul and cranked out 46 winners to his opponent's four. And he had the entire stadium on their feet when he reprised the between-the-legs winner he hit last year in the semi-finals against Novak Djokovic.

Roger will plays Germany's Andreas Beck (ATP 104) in the second round. He has never player the 24 year old on the Tour before.

Roger has secured his place in the season-ending Barclays ATP World Tour Finals, to be held at The O2 in London, 21-28 November. The Swiss clinched his berth after beating Argentine Brian Dabul in the first round of the US Open Monday night.

"I am very happy as it is the ninth consecutive year I have qualified for the year-end event," Federer said. "I have played in a lot of different venues during my career and I can say they staged a fantastic event at The 02 last year. I look forward to returning there in November and finishing the season strong."

Federer back to winning ways with Fourth Cincinnati Crown

ATP World Tour No. 2 Roger Federer ended a seven-month title drought on Sunday as he battled past the in-form Mardy Fish 6-7(5), 7-6(1), 6-4 to win the Western & Southern Financial Group Masters for a fourth time.

Federer had gone title-less since capturing his 16th Grand Slam championship at the Australian Open (d. Murray) in January and was contesting his 90th tour-level final. In winning his 63rd tour-level title, the Swiss moved into joint-fifth position with Bjorn Borg in the list of Open Era (since 1968) title leaders.

The 29-year-old Federer also won the Cincinnati title in 2005 (d. Roddick), 2007 (d. Blake) and 2009 (d. Djokovic) and became only the second player to win the title four times, joining Swede Mats Wilander (1983-84, ’86, ’88). He is the first player to win back-to-back titles in Cincinnati since Andre Agassi in 1995-96.

By virtue of winning his 17th ATP World Tour Masters 1000 trophy, Federer received 1000 South African Airways 2010 ATP Rankings, which will further boost his chances of qualifying for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals. The top eight players at the end of the season qualify for the year-end championships at The O2 in London.

"I've been playing well the past couple weeks, and today was just another proof that I'm playing really well," said Federer. "I thought I played an excellent match today. I had huge belief that I was going to win today from the first point until the end. That sometimes can make a bit of a difference. Then I was positive all the way through because I felt I was playing well, even though I lost the first set. So I never got down on myself and doubted myself. I think that reflected in the game as well."

After the disappointment of losing in the Wimbledon quarter-finals to Tomas Berdych, Federer said he had spent the following six weeks looking for areas to improve in his game, notably his aggressive stance on hard courts. The hard work paid dividends as he advanced to the Toronto final last week (l. to Murray) and impressed against Nikolay Davydenko and Marcos Baghdatis to reach another final this week.

While he was not at the same high level throughout the whole of Sunday’s final, he employed his new tactics at the key moments by raising his intensity levels and aggression in the second-set tie-break and closing stages of the third set to record his sixth win in seventh meetings with Fish.

After failing to convert on four break point chances in the first set, courtesy of clutch serving from Fish, Federer then squandered a 5-4 mini-break advantage in the tie-break as Fish hit back to win the final three points and clinch a one-set lead.

An unusually subdued Federer still struggled to find his A-game in the second set and was made to fight off a break point chance for Fish in the fifth game, earning a reprieve as the attacking American went for too much on a forehand down the line. The danger served to fire up Federer and as the set went to another tie-break, he raised his game up a gear to dominate Fish from the outset. The Florida resident, who had gone 18-4 in tie-breaks throughout the season, was unable to find an answer as Federer went on the attack and sealed the tie-break 7-1 to force a deciding set.

Federer was unable to capitalise on his momentum in the early stages of the third set as Fish continued to keep the Swiss at bay with fine serving. However, a tight game from Fish at 4-4, coupled with purposeful aggression from Federer, yielded the decisive service break for the Basel native, who then confidently served out the match in two hours and 40 minutes.

"I thought I played well the whole match through," assessed Federer. "I don't think I played better in the second or third set. I thought the first set was the one I really should have won and ended up losing, so I think it was a close match. Could have gone either way. I had a tough moment staring at one set down and break point in the second set. You think you're playing a good match, but you might lose 6 and 4. I hung tough and made him work hard and was able to come across the finish line faster than him."

63rd tournament title!

Roger celebrated his fourth Cincinnati Masters and 63rd career title with a 6-7(5), 7-6(1), 6-4 win over Mardy Fish today.

Roger is only the fourth player to capture four titles in Cincinnati (after 2005, 2007 and 2009).

He dominated the first set but was unable to convert any of his four break-points - taking the set into a tie-break. Everything looked good as he took a 5-4 lead, only to slip two mini-breaks behind and then let his American opponent serve for the set. It was then Fish who had the only break-point of the second set, which he in turn did not profit from. Roger was at his best in the second tie-break of the match, leaving Fish no chance at all. It looked as though the final set would again lead to a tie-break, when Roger thrilled tennis-fans with several stunning points, securing a break to take a 5-4 lead and finally the match.

Roger certainly proved that he is ready for the US Open which starts on August 30th!

Attacking Federer reaches Cincinnati final

An aggressive Roger Federer will chase a fourth Cincinnati title and 17th ATP World Tour Masters 1000 crown when he meets Mardy Fish in the final of the Western & Southern Financial Group Masters Sunday. Defending champion Federer enjoyed an emphatic 6-4, 6-3 semi-final win Saturday night over Marcos Baghdatis, who defeated the Swiss earlier in the year in Indian Wells.

Federer was in imperious form, dropping just three points on first serve and ruffling Baghdatis with sustained aggression, including regular forays to the net. The five-time ATP World Tour No. 1 said that he used downtime since Wimbledon to retool his game, adding more aggressive elements to his already formidable arsenal.

“The past year I’ve been very disappointed with my returning," Federer said. "I’ve played very safe the whole time and even on the first serve I haven’t been able to read the players as much, which had been my big strength. That got me thinking… After Wimbledon I had six weeks to work on a few things. On the hard courts it’s nice to play forwards and not always be defensive and let the other guy dictate. I’m happy that the hard work is paying off right away.”

Federer leads Fish 5-1 in career meetings but the American won when they last played at Indian Wells in 2008.

Baghdatis, who won 87 percent of first serves in his quarter-final win over Rafael Nadal, barely topped 50 percent against Federer, who threw in some well-timed chip-and-charge plays, including on break point to close out the first set.

Cincinnati 2010: Federer friday interview

Federer closes on fourth Cincy title

Roger Federer converted a brief moment of concern into a match-winning opportunity against Nikolay Davydenko to reach the semi-finals of the Western & Southern Financial Group Masters Friday.

Facing double break point at 4-4 15/40 in the first set, Federer rallied to hold serve and win five consecutive games after breaking the Russian to close out the first set and again in the second game of the second set to race to a 3-0 lead.

Davydenko did break back to challenge Federer, but the five-time ATP World Tour Champion eventually sealed victory 6-4, 7-5 and will next play Marcos Baghdatis, who upset ATP World Tour No. 1 Rafael Nadal 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 in the feature night match.

Federer, who won the Cincinnati title in 2005, '07 and '09, has won 20 of 22 matches here since 2005. The Swiss is attempting to reach his second ATP World Tour Masters 1000 final in as many weeks, having fallen to Andy Murray last week in the Toronto title match. He is aso looking for his second title of the year and first since late January at the Australian Open.

"I know the danger [against Nikolay]... so it was a tough match for me. But I felt like I played really good considering I had not played well this week yet," said Federer, who had played just seven games en route to the quarter-finals. In his opener he was leading 5-2 when Denis Istomin retired with an ankle injury and in the third round Federer received a walkover from Philipp Kohlschreiber, who had a shoulder injury.

"Today I had a good ten minutes, and all of a sudden I'm up 6-4, 2-0. You don't know what happened, but you're in the lead. So it's just the way it goes. You got to make the best of it, and I'm happy and it's another successful year for me here in Cincy."

Another unexpected break

Roger can profit from another unexpected break, moving on to the quarter finals in Cincinnati. He advanced by walkover as his third-round opponent Philipp Kohlschreiber retired due to a right shoulder injury.

Roger has yet to play a complete match this week and will play Russian sixth seed Nikolay Davydenko on Friday not before 4 pm.

Date: 20.08.2010, Source: RF Official

Istomin has to retire

Roger advanced into the round of the last sixteen in Cininnati as his opponent, qualifier Denis Istomin, had to retire at 5-2.

"If there is a right timing for this, it's now, I guess," Roger said. "It gives me an extra day to get into it. From that standpoint, it's good."

Istomin hurt his right foot and ankle during a rally and had to quit the match after only 28 minutes. Roger controlled the match and had a 5-2 lead when Istomin pulled up and sat down in the corner of the court, removing his shoe. He got the foot and ankle taped, but couldn't put much weight on the leg and decided to retire.

Roger certainly welcomed the easy night coming off his finals match in Toronto but was obviously also sorry for his opponent's injury.

Roger will play Philipp Kohlschreiber (GER) in the next round in Cincinnati on Thursday not before 4 p.m. (local time).

Roger begins title defence on wednesday

In a fan-friendly scheduling situation at the Western & Southern Financial Group Masters, the top four seeds will all play Wednesday in two jam-packed sessions at the Lindner Family Tennis Center.

Roger Federer will begin his title defense against qualifier Denis Istomin in the 7 p.m. match on Center Court. Federer has won in Cincinnati three times.

No. 2 seed Novak Djokovic kicks off the day against fellow Serbian Viktor Troicki on Center Court. The other matches on Center Court feature No. 1 seed Rafael Nadal and No. 4 seed Andy Murray in their first matches in Cincinnati this year and No. 9 seed Andy Roddick in his second.

Capping the night are returning doubles champions Daniel Nestor and Nenad Zimonjic.

The high quality of tennis isn’t limited strictly to Center Court on Wednesday. Grandstand boasts Grand Slam champions, finalists and semifinalists with household names like Lleyton Hewitt, Robin Soderling, John Isner and last year’s US Open Series points champion Sam Querrey.

A total of 19 matches are scheduled for Wednesday across all four courts.

Roger defeated in Toronto final

Roger suffered a 5-7, 5-7 defeat against Andy Murray in a rain-affected final at the Rogers Cup in Toronto today.

He had to deal with a rough start against the Scot, falling back 0-3 with a double-break. Roger rallied, however, and over the course of the set clawed both breaks back with a mix of wonderful strokes and hard graft to level at 5-5. A tie-break seemed likely but Murray eked out an advantage on our champ's serve, eventually taking the set.

The second set was delayed by rain several times. Murray secured a break advantage at one stage and Roger displayed great tennis after a second rain delay, breaking Murray back and later levelling to 5-5. But as in the first set, Roger faced another late break and eventually had to admit defeat after just over 2 hours of play.

Thanks to his great performance this week, Roger has climbed back up to the number 2 spot in the world rankings. He is playing Cincinnati this week where he will either meet James Blake or a qualifier in the second round after a first round bye. He certainly looks ready to defend the title!

Roger Federer fires into Rogers Cup final

Roger Federer wrestled the World No. 2 ranking from Novak Djokovic by beating the Serb 6-1, 3-6, 7-5 in a rollercoaster Rogers Cup semi-final Saturday night in Toronto. Federer now eyes a 17th ATP World Tour Masters 1000 title in Sunday’s final against Andy Murray.

In perhaps the strangest match on the ATP World Tour this season, Federer looked as though he would cruise into the final in less than an hour. Djokovic, who hit two winners to 16 unforced errors in the first set as a he blasted ground strokes far and wide, found himself staring defeat in the face at 2-6, 0-2 0/30 on his serve.

But after belatedly switching gears to play with a greater margin for error, Djokovic worked his way back into the match and eventually held three break points on Federer’s serve at 5-all in the third set.

But Federer held serve and then watched on as the match finished as it started, with Djokovic spraying five errors in the final game to lose serve and the match.

Asked about the strange nature of the match, Federer said, “I was up very quickly, too quickly almost. Against a guy like Novak I knew all it would take would be one service break and his whole attitude and demeanour will change. He started to serve better, return better and not miss so much and everything just tightened up. He’s known for being a bit streaky and we saw that tonight. I could have won the match earlier but I’m very happy to have come through anyhow.

“I’ve had some tough losses this year and it’s nice to get some of those back. I was losing the tight matches that I’m supposed to win."

Roger Federer Toronto 2010 QF Interview

Date: 14.08.2010, Source: YouTube

Roger Federer gets revenge on Berdych

Roger Federer rediscovered his form, confidence and aggression Friday night in Toronto as he avenged consecutive defeats to Tomas Berdych with a 6-3, 5-7, 7-6(5) win over the Czech to reach the Rogers Cup semi-finals. But although it was one of Federer's most important wins of the year, he risked defeat after abadoning his earlier aggression, allowing Berdych to come within two points of victory.

Influenced by new coach Paul Annacone, Federer came out swinging, outhitting 2010 Wimbledon finalist Berdych, who fell behind 0/30 in his four service games of the first set. Five-time ATP World Tour Champion Federer was particularly aggressive on his backhand wing, stepping into the court to let rip, regularly attacking the net and serving with a challenging mix of spin, pace and angles. Federer, who won the first 23 points on his first serve, broke for a 4-2 lead and closed out the set confidently, without facing a break point.

Realising that he needed to change the momentum of the match, Berdych matched Federer’s aggression in the second set and earned back-to-back 15/40 opportunities on the Swiss’ serve at 3-2 and 4-3 as the match took on the look and feel of a heavyweight title fight. But Federer was up to the challenge and saved all four break point chances to level at 4-all, and then had two break chances of his own in the ninth game, but they went unconverted.

Federer had another 0/30 opportunity at 5-all but Berdych survived and then, aided by two double faults, broke Federer to steal the second set.

Federer was facing his third straight defeat to Berdych this year when the Wimbledon finalist served for the match at 5-3 in the third set. But Federer finally converted his fourth break point of the game – and seventh of the set – to get back on serve. But in the following game he twice found himself two points from defeat at 15/30 and later deuce. In a rollercoaster tie-break, Federer raced to a 4-0 lead only to see Berdych claw back to 5-all. But the Swiss, who was at his best when he attacked, clipped a trademark inside-out forehand to set up match point and then drew a Berdych forehand error long when he drew the Czech towards the net to track down a short backhand slice.

Federer left no doubt about what the victory meant to him. “Sometimes you don't have much say playing against a player with the power of Berdych and he's on a streak. This is why this is a great victory for me, great to stop him, good for me, for my confidence this week and next week and the following week.  I could definitely take a lot out of this victory.”

“ I don't want to lose any of the matches,  especially not against a guy once, twice, or three times in a row, but then you've got to give credit to the guy, too.  He's been playing really well.  He's been dangerous.  He's been taking advantage of tough draws now and making moves.  That's tough to stop him.”

On the electric atmosphere at the Rexall Centre, Federer said, “The crowds were absolutely amazing.  Rarely do you get those kind of atmospheres, so I knew that was something special.  I have always around the world great support, but when it gets so loud and so exciting, it's obviously something different.  Adrenaline starts going, and you hope you come out, you know, on the better end at the end, and that's what I was able to do.  I'm really, really happy.

“I thought was going to slip away again like at the beginning of the season, but I was able to turn it around.  It was definitely huge at this point.  It was the crowd on top of it. .. I tried to take out a few things from Wimbledon, but honestly, out there I was thinking of the Miami match, and that one kind of played out pretty similar except this time I made it.”

Roger Federer advances to quarters

Roger defeated Michael Llodra 7-6 (2), 6-3 today to set up a quarter-final clash with his conqueror at Wimbledon six weeks ago, Tomas Berdych.

Roger needed one hour and 19 minutes to complete victory today. He did not manage to find his rhythm right from the start, falling behind 0-3. But he managed to come back to 3-4 and then eventually secure the set with ease in the tie-break. The second set posed no threat to our champ, even though he dropped serve again at 5-1. The two players have both been active on the ATP-Tour for over ten years, but - astonishingly - had never met in a major tournament before.

"It will bring back memories, some not so nice," Roger said of the rematch against Berdych. "Hopefully I can get him back."

“It’s the first time I got an underarm serve,” Federer said with a laugh. “The third time somebody asked me for the shirt.”

Llodra: “Roger is a legend,” Llodra said. “It’s a good present for my kids.”

Roger Federer sets Masters 1000 Record

Roger Federer became the all-time match wins leader in ATP World Tour Masters 1000 action after defeating Argentine Juan Ignacio Chela 7-6(7), 6-3 on Tuesday night at the Rogers Cup in Toronto.

The World No. 3, who notched his first ATP World Tour Masters 1000 win in 2000 at Miami, improved to a 210-65 lifetime record at the ATP’s premier level of tournaments. American Andre Agassi, the previous record holder, compiled a 209-73 mark from 1990-2006.

Federer returned to competition for the first time in more than a month, and was made to work hard in his second-round opener. Chela double faulted to give Federer a break in the sixth game, but prevented the Swiss from serving out the set as he converted on a triple break point opportunity to get back on serve at 5-4. Federer finally sealed the set after putting away his fifth set point of the tie-break.

The second set proved more straightfoward for the third-seeeded Swiss. Federer broke Chela to go up 3-2 and closed out the match in one hour and 21 minutes with another break of serve.

"I thought it was a good match overall," he said. "It's always nice to come back after six weeks and get the win. I think that's really what counts the most tonight. It's normal that you're a bit rusty after six weeks. You have to work your way into playing matches again, even though you play a lot of practice sets and matches."

Federer is looking to win his 17 ATP World Tour Masters 1000 title, and his first since last August at the Western & Southern Financial Group Masters in Cincinnati. He won his two Rogers Cup titles in 2004 and ’06 in Toronto.

This is Federer’s first tournament appearance as the world’s No. 3 player since the 2003 Tennis Masters Cup in Houston, where he ended up winning the title with victory over Andre Agassi in the final.

"Rankings are what they are," said Federer. "You can't control them that much unless you win tournaments. That's not what I have been doing lately, so I know I have to try to do better there. Other guys played well, as well. So they deserve the ranking that everybody has. Rankings usually don't lie, so it's up to me to make a move now."

The Swiss, who celebrated his 29th birthday Sunday, will next face the winner of the Nicolas Almagro-Michael Llodra match.

Roger Federer wins first match

Roger made a good start in Toronto to beat Juan Ignacio Chela 7-6 (7), 6-3 to reach the third round of the Rogers Cup.

"I'm glad to go through," Roger said. "I was a bit rusty in the opening match and he really made me play. But I'm very happy with how it went tonight."

Roger opened the match in brilliant fashion, approaching the net more than he has done recently, and went to take a 5-2 lead. But he battled with his serve after that and was unable to make use of two set-points at 5-4, taking the match into a tie-breaker. That proved to be a tough one, but our champ made it through and took home the first set - taking him seven set points and 48 minutes all in all. Roger showed solid tennis in the second set, booking his spot in the round of the last eight after 81 minutes of play.

Next up is either Nicolas Almagro (ATP 16) or Michael Llodra (ATP 35) on Thursday.

Roger Federer hopes to start come back in Toronto

Since his last competitive match, Roger Federer has fought off aches and illness, fallen from No. 1 in the rankings and hired a coach.

Now his body feels better. Whether his game is improved will be seen starting Tuesday, when he begins play at the Rogers Cup in the second round.

“Being ranked No. 3 in the world is something I haven’t been in a very long time,” Federer said Monday. “I’m doing all the right things. It’s, to me, just a matter of time. But guys are getting good and it’s inspiring for me also to get better.”

Federer has won 62 singles titles on the ATP World Tour, but only one this year.

He took the Australian Open in January - his 16th Grand Slam title - but was forced to withdraw from a tournament in Dubai the following month with a lung infection. He has not played competitively since his quarterfinal loss to Tomas Berdych at Wimbledon in June.

He has spent several weeks working with Paul Annacone, whose former pupils include Pete Sampras and Marat Safin.

“I don’t think I was frustrated after my loss from Wimbledon,” Federer said. “I was disappointed that my body wasn’t holding up and that Berdych played such a good match and that I couldn’t defend my Wimbledon dream again.”

The third-seeded Federer will face Juan Ignacio Chela, who advanced with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Alejandro Falla.

29th Birthday

Dear Fans

It is a great feeling to be celebrating my birthday with my family here in Canada. I am excited to compete again these days after having spent several weeks preparing intensely for the second half of the 2010-season.

Thank you so much for all your kind messages and wonderful gifts that I have received these past days and continue to receive today. This really motivates me as I can see how much my passion for tennis also means to you. I would like to thank you all for your loyalty over all these years - let's hope for many more to come!

All the best and see you soon,
Roger

Rogers Cup

Roger has an extra day off thanks to a first round bye at the Rogers Cup in Toronto. He will then either play Juan Ignacio Chela (ARG, ATP 48) or Alejandro Falla (COL, ATP 61).

Roger won the last two matches against Juan Ignacio Chela with ease in two sets. Alejandro Falla is a different topic - our Champ had to dig deep in the first round in Wimbledon against the Columbian this year, battling to victory in the fifth set.

Roger is scheduled to play his first match on Tuesday evening (local time).

It sparkles in Roger Federer's eyes

Mr. Paganini, how fit is Roger Federer now?
Pierre Paganini: Currently he is superfit. We train for two weeks soon. The holidays have done him good.

At Wimbledon, he complained of pain. What was the result?
In principle this is quite normal. 60-70 Matches played per year. Because there are just games in which you carry around a small injury to himself, his back feels. Especially on grass. He has not so felt comfortable. Accordingly we enter with less confidence. Then the puzzle is already a little disturbed. At these levels have small things a big effect.

How much fitness is at-from Federer?
It is still the most beautiful when everything is right. As a man, as an athlete, as a player. The reality, however, is that Roger, like many others, are from time to time in one hundred percent match is not feeling well. He knows that he can beat most opponents, even if it is missing a detail. But he also knows that it is dangerous then.

Federer is 29th in one week, Like its performance parameters seen in comparison to earlier?
He is exactly the same fit as six years ago or three years ago. Exact figures I give out no. But all the measurements, one can have on explosiveness, speed or endurance of specific, are where they should be. He also has a lot more maturity, because he has been training all these years, very disciplined. The fact is: we can not implement every day, what one has everything in the suitcase.

Age is no problem?
At 29 or 30 years you are not old. But in this age one has very much made it very often. This is the huge-difference. It is not your first workout, not your first game. He will soon have 900 matches in his legs and x-thousand training sessions. This can be felt easily. What changes now is not the quality of the athletes. But the design is different. You have the body a little more time to give to make certain things.

The statistics of many former top players shows that there is usually a straight with 29 in performance.
It's different for everyone. Agassi had a long interruption in between. It is important to readiness. What has impressed me in two weeks: He will come to training with a freshness in the head when he was a junior. I'm fascinated. It sparkles in his eyes. If he says, now you have one and a half days off, he says: Maybe it's fine tomorrow, maybe we can train. This shows me that he has the mental juices.

Then Federer beats differently?
Perhaps others were less tennisverliebt. Roger loves ball games. Roger loves the pimples. That is why he plays. But what he has so far made has cost him too much energy. The respect you have. -Roger trained as much. You have to divide it differently. The same amount, different doses.

What do you think when people say, its time run slowly.
If one of the pub with a beer in hand, says something, he should say so. -Those can not be angry. Because they know no better. What irritates me are the so-called specialists, who conjure up after each defeat the end. Who feels tennis should come to a different verdict.
