Roger suffers clear defeat

Six of the world's best players are getting ready for the 2012 season at an exhibition in Abu Dhabi this week.

After a first round bye, Roger played Novak Djokovic in the semi-final today. After a tight opening, Djokovic soon began to settle into his stride and pulled away with a break of serve, before winning nine straight games. Unfortunately, Roger found no answer, letting the Serb streak away to a clear 2-6, 1-6 victory.

“It’s surprising when it goes quick and you are on the losing side. It’s not so comfortable sometimes,” Federer said.

“You try hard and try different things and it’s not working. He was playing really well,” Federer said. “Unfortunately, it was a short-lived match but we know he is a very good front runner. He took the lead in both sets quite early and that made it difficult because conditions were pretty quick and my game was not good enough today to make it more competitive.”

The season will officially start next week, as Roger opens the new year by defending his Doha title.

No Federer-Hingis pair in 2012 London Olympics

Roger Federer and Martina Hingis have decided not play together in next summer’s 2012 London Olympics. Federer’s trainer Severin Luthi has confirmed that reports to the Swiss media in London.

The 2012 Olympic pairing that was never meant to be has been quietly masked, with Roger Federer’s coach Severin Luthi confirms that his and former great Martina Hingis have dropped the plans of teaming up for a London Olympic mixed doubles dream team. He said that Martina and Roger talked together and decided that they will not compete in mixed doubles.

However, there is strong speculation about the two greats pairing up for 2012 Olympics; exactly it has been most hot topic for half year. Both, Hingis and Federer have decided against idea of pairing up as a team on Olympics. Hingis has retired second time form Tennis in 2007 after a positive fight with drug test, would have had to jump through numerous technical studs to have even been allowed to form the potential all-star partnership.

It was the 16-time Grand slam title winner, one who mentioned the idea to journalists in August. Lüthi said Federer has great ambitions for the Olympics, as Fedex opened up with media even discussing the possibility with Hingis in person. Federer described the former women’s number one as having been a wonderful player.

Luthi said that Federer is hoping that he and Stanislas Wawrinka will repeat their doubles victory of 2008, and Federer even aims to win the gold in the singles for the first time. Since 1924 Olympics, there is no mixed doubles in the Olympics, but this time in London, there will be mixed doubles in 2012 Olympics.

Another Olympic Gold in Federer’s near future

Federer is looking for Gold and where’s he gonna find it? The 2012 London Summer Olympics of course.  Federer has won sixteen Grand Slam titles but has still not won a single Olympic singles gold in all his years of playing. That’s not to discount the gold medal he won in men’s doubles at the Beijing Olympic games in 2008 with Stanislas Wawrinka.

Federer has appeared in three summer Olympics so far: the 2000 Sydney games, Athens in 2004, and Beijing in 2008. At thirty years old with his career winding down the London Summer Olympics may be his last chance to win the elusive singles gold.

Federer finished the 2011 season with strength, winning his sixth ATP World Tour Finals, making his primary concern for the London games not how well he’s doing before, but as he said, “I am looking forward to next year, coming back to London, hopefully on three occasions and this is going to be a very important place to play good tennis. I hope to be healthy when the Olympics do come around.”

Federer is betting on playing not only in men’s singles at the London Olympics, but also in men’s doubles and mixed doubles. Playing in three events may be a bit unrealistic for Federer which he admits himself but he’s betting on a possible pairing with retired Martina Hingis, a former women’s No.1, as his partner in mixed doubles.

In a recent interview about playing the Olympics double with Hingis, Federer stated, “Might as well just see if she is available. If I played mixed with anybody it would be with Hingis just because she’s been an amazing player and I had my first kind of success at the Hopman Cup with her and practiced and played with her before. Even if she is retired, she might think about it at least. I’ve approached her already a long time ago, and I guess she just mentioned something to the press and it took a life of its own.”

“But I haven’t spoken to her myself yet. We’ll see where it goes. I know it’s a lot on your plate to play singles, doubles, and mixed. I need to decide if I want to do that in the first place, and then see if she will come out of retirement. Still have a lot of things to go through, but haven’t spoken yet. I don’t know what’s going to happen.”

So there you have it. Federer may or may not play with Hingis which would be a dream match for many spectators. And if any of you have paid attention to the speculation that Federer will soon go into retirement following the London Olympics, ending his career on a high note - well its all a bunch of hoopla. Federer has plans beyond the 2012 Olympics, which have led many to think about where the future of his career will go, especially after it is considered one of the best ever.

Federer will return to No. 1 - Henman

Former British No. 1 Tim Henman believes Roger Federer will break Pete Sampras' record as longest-standing No. 1.

Federer has spent 285 weeks at No. 1 - just one week short of Sampras' record, but Henman is confident Federer is capable of adding to his 16 grand slams and returning to world No. 1.

"I think with a rolling ranking it will be interesting to see if Federer can get back to No. 1," Henman said. "He is just short of Sampras' record for most weeks at world No. 1. I know Roger will really want to break that record, so I think it's possible.

"I think he will win more slams, I really do. If the conditions favour him then Roger at his best is still better than anyone else."

Federer ended the year on a high, winning titles in Basel and Paris before claiming a record sixth crown at the ATP World Tour Finals in London. And the former world No. 4 believes Federer's recent form just proves the danger of writing off the Swiss.

"I've always been a Federer fan because I love the way he plays, and while he's lost a few matches out there this year, he deserved to win in London," Henman told the ATP Champions Tour website.

"It's amazing that people were trying to write him off. For Roger to play the way that he did in London and go beyond both Pete Sampras and Ivan Lendl in terms of year ending championship victories, that was incredible."

Federer and Nadal competes in 2012 Gerry Weber Open

Next year's 20th anniversary Gerry Weber Open will boast one of the strongest fields in its history after announcing Thursday that Roger Federer, Tomas Berdych and Gael Monfils would join Rafael Nadal at the event. "In all the conversations I have held with the players, it has been confirmed to me once again that our tournament for them is an important mark in their schedules," said tournament director Ralf Weber.

Federer, who endorsed a lifetime contract with the event two years ago, is a five-time champion, and Berdych triumphed in 2007 when he defeated Marcos Baghdatis in the final. "The ambience always is particularly inspiring for me," Berdych told Weber. "The stadium is awesome and the enthusiasm of the audience is very emotional. Nevertheless, I am able to prepare for the upcoming tournaments in a laid-back ambiance. This is important specifically for 2012, since Wimbledon will be followed by the Olympic Games in London."

Weber also received acceptance from 15th-ranked Monfils. The Frenchman will aim to win his first grass-court title when he competes in Halle. "He will produce a real big bang one day," stated Weber. "Because of fellows like him, that’s what we need in tennis and at the Gerry Weber Open."

World No. 2 Nadal signed a three-year commitment to play the tournament earlier in the week.

Federer will chase No. 1 ranking in 2012

Roger Federer believes that his strong finish to the 2011 season puts him ‘in the conversation’ for a run at the No. 1 South African Airways ATP Rankings later next year, even though the Swiss will begin the year a massive 5,460 points behind No. 1 Novak Djokovic.

During a wide-ranging interview with Christopher Clarey for The New York Times, Federer said that he was excited by the prospect of challenging for No. 1 and trying to surpass Pete Sampras’ record of 286 weeks in top spot. Federer fell just one week shy of equaling the Sampras record when he surrendered the No. 1 ranking to Nadal (for a second time) in June 2010.

“Well, that’s a long way to go, but who knows? One day maybe I’ll get there,” Federer said of the hunt for No. 1. “I had to just kind of ignore it at the moment because I know that Novak with his unbelievable year has kind of put that very far from me, but then again, all of the sudden you play well and you win 17 matches in a row and you’re back where you at least feel if you win a Slam or something, you’re right in the conversation again, so that’s interesting and that excites me.”

Federer ended 2011 by winning three consecutive tournaments, the Swiss Indoors Basel, the BNP Paribas Masters and the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals, collecting 4,000 point that will stay on his 52-week ranking till very late in the 2012 season.

Federer also indicated to The New York Times that he would likely play in Switzerland’s first round Davis Cup tie on home soil against the United States in the first week of March. “I think it looks good that I will play, but I still just have to finalize my schedule,” said Federer, who has not contested a non-relegation Davis Cup tie since 2004.

Federer also revealed that he extended his partnership with coach Paul Annacone after his heartbreaking loss to Novak Djokovic in the US Open semi-finals, when the Serb saved two match points. “I know when someone is doing a good job and when someone is not,” said Federer, who said he told Annacone, “Just because Novak smashed a forehand past me, and I missed match point, has no effect on my decision in working with you.”
