ATP - ROGER ELIMINATES KIEFER

Roger rolled to an easy straight-set win Sunday in the third round of the Sony Ericsson Open in Miami. Roger spent little more than an hour in the rout and never faced a break point as he beat Kiefer 6-4, 6-1 for the 11th consecutive time after losing four of the first five in their series which began in 2000.

The 27-year-old Roger is bidding for his 15th ATP World Tour Masters 1000 title, and his third in Miami after previously triumphing in 2005 (d. Nadal in five sets) and 2006 (d. Ljubicic in three tie-breaks). Our champ, who lost in the quarterfinals to Andy Roddick last year, improved to a 32-8 tournament record.

Roger will next play Taylor Dent, an American qualifier who topped 15th-seeded Tommy Robredo of Spain 7-5, 6-3.

ATP - A PROMISING START

Roger began his bid for a third Key Biscayne title Friday by beating Kevin Kim 6-3, 6-2.

Roger blew past the American qualifier in just over an hour on the hardcourts at the Tennis Center at Crandon Park. Our champ titled back-to-back at the tournament in 2005 and 2006 and was the runner-up in 2002. He started with a fair number of errors today but nevertheless clearly brought home the first set. The fine-tuning then seemed to have been done and Roger broke his opponent’s serve twice in the second, going on to score an undisputed victory.

Roger’s third-round opponent will be German Nicolas Kiefer. The two have played each other 14 times with Roger winning 11 of the matches.

ATP - ANOTHER DEFEAT BY MURRAY

Roger lost his semifinal against Andy Murray 3-6, 6-4, 1-6 in Indian Wells on Saturday.

Both players agreed that it was one of their toughest matches so far. For a few minutes shy of two hours, Roger had been outplayed. He had to face a strong performance by the Scotsman but also a large number of errors on his own side: 32 unforced errors in total, 17 in the first set alone. In the middle of the third set, after Murray took a spill at the baseline, Roger seemed to make a charge. Unfortunately he then lost three straight points off of his backhand giving Murray a 4-1 lead and again committing an unusual amount of errors.

"I played a shocking third set," Roger said. "It was one of those matches where it was very up and down from both ends and today the better player won."

Roger will be back on court very soon, with the Sony Ericsson Open in Miami starting on Monday.

ATP - SEMIS AGAINST MURRAY

Roger held off a late rally from Fernando Verdasco to score a 6-3, 7-6 (5) victory Thursday night in Indian Wells, advancing to the semi finals.

Roger had a great start and continued well into the second set, taking a 4-1 lead. However, Verdasco got on a run and broke Roger twice, including the 11th game to take a 6-5 lead to serve for the set. “I don't think I served great in those games, and I think he got some good hits in,” Roger said. “Because he's got such big shots, especially his forehand, he can put you under pressure quickly.

Roger fought off set points, taking the second set into the tie-break where he raced out to a 5-1 lead and later finished with a service winner.

Roger will play Andy Murray in the semis, which will be a rematch of the U.S. Open final, which Roger won in the fall. "He's a great player and great players are tough to play against," said Roger. "He's young, so you still have to figure him out a little bit. He's changing his game as time goes by. Every time you play him, he plays a bit different. I'm aware he has beaten me more than I've beaten him but, on big occasions, I think I came through."

ATP - ROGER BATTLES INTO QUARTERS

Roger has moved into the quarterfinals in Indian Wells with a 6-3, 5-7, 6-2 victory over Fernando Gonzalez in 1 hour 50 minutes.

Our champ raised his game when he needed to, setting up an encounter with Fernando Verdasco, the 10th seed. Roger cruised through the first set but Gonzalez, unleashing a series of spectacular forehand winners, broke in the 12th game of the second set to force a decider. But Roger then stepped on the gas, breaking in the third game of the third set and then again in the seventh before serving out for victory.

17.03.2009

ATP - ROGER CRUISES ON

Roger felled big-serving Croat Ivo Karlovic 7-6 6-3 in just 70 minutes to reach the fourth round in Indian Wells.

“It’s always a bit of a success story to get his serve back,” Roger said. “It seems like he is serving from the service line. Ivo has really improved a lot over the past few years so it’s always nice to get through a tough match like this.”

Our champ was able to withstand 13 aces by the Croatian, breaking him in the seventh game of the second set to avoid another tiebreaker while never facing a break point himself. "That's always a good thing," he said of holding serve with ease. "That kind of keeps you a bit relaxed." Despite his dominant record over Karlovic, Roger said he was always glad to come away with a win against him.

Roger next faces Chile's Fernando Gonzalez (head-to-head: 11:1), who dispatched American James Blake 7-5, 6-1.

16.03.2009

ATP - OUT IN THE DOUBLES

Roger and Yves Allegro were clearly defeated in their first-round doubles match against Bob and Mike Bryan: 2-6, 0-6. The Bryan brothers displayed their class, just as they had during the Davis Cup encounter.

Roger lost serve three times (0-2 in the first and 0-2 and 0-6 in the second set), Yves Allegro did so twice (2-6 in the first and 0-4 in the second set). So unfortunately Roger has not been able to help Yves Allegro win his first doubles match this year.

15.03.2009

ATP - ROGER RETURNS TO FORM

Roger has booked his place in the third round in Indian Wells with a 7-6, 6-4 victory over Marc Gicquel (ATP 52).

He was unable to break his opponent in the first set but edged it 7-4 in the tie-break before gaining a crucial break in the second to clinch the win. "I am happy," he said. "I was a bit rusty maybe, coming back from not having played. But it was OK. I'm happy I've won. That's always most important.

Our champ hadn't been in action since the Australian Open at the beginning February. This makes his successful return just the more significant. Looking at the statistics, they certainly show that Roger is in shape: he served 12 aces and won 92% of his first serve points.

Roger will now face Ivo Karlovic in the third round after the Croat beat Sergiy Stakhovsky 6-4 6-2.
