Federer win breaks Sampras record (BBC Online)

Roger Federer became the greatest player in Grand Slam history as he beat Andy Roddick in five dramatic sets for a sixth Wimbledon and 15th major title.

The Swiss won 5-7 7-6 (8-6) 7-6 (7-5) 3-6 16-14 to surpass Pete Sampras's 14 Grand Slam wins and regain the title he lost to Rafael Nadal last year.

And Sampras was back at Wimbledon for the first time since 2002 to watch from the Royal Box as Federer made history.

But he had to dig deep against an in-form Roddick, who had four points for a two-set lead and then battled back to force an epic fifth set as the match became the longest men's singles final ever in terms of games played.

After Federer overcame Andy Roddick in a marathon, five-set serving duel Sunday for his sixth Wimbledon title and 15th Grand Slam championship, Sampras was left with no doubt about who is the greatest male player of all time.

There is no denying that Federer has firmly cemented himself as the finest player of the generation and, at age 27, the favorite for other major titles to come.

Roger Federer is a great - and humble- tennis icon (LA Times Online)

Like Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln and Teddy Roosevelt, carved into the granite of a symbolic national structure, there were Rod Laver, Bjorn Borg, Pete Sampras and Roger Federer, the Mt. Rushmore of men's tennis.

And now Federer, that impeccably elegant, perfect Swiss timepiece, is the grandest champion of all, better than everybody else, the first face on the tennis mountain that all eyes will be drawn to.

Pete Sampras pays homage to great Roger Federer following Wimbledon triumph (sofiaecho.com)

Swiss ace and world number one Roger Federer has said of his epic Wimbledon final and his historic 15th Grand Slam that he has shocked even himself and still finds it rather hard to digest the reality, that he has surprised Pete Sampras' record of 14 Grand Slam titles.

Sampras paid homage to the great Swiss, insisting that should he maintain his top form, determination and hunger for the game, and more importantly, should he remain injury free, he could easily win 18 or 19 Grand Slams during his career. Beat that.

ATP - ROGER MAKES HISTORY!

In a dramatic encounter that lasted over four hours Roger made history today! He defeated Andy Roddick to land a record-breaking 15th Grand Slam title in a thrilling final in Wimbledon, winning 5-7 7-6 (8-6) 7-6 (7-5) 3-6 and 16-14.

His words after the amazing success were: "It's not one of those goals you set as a young boy. It feels amazing. I don't play tennis to break records, but this is a great one to have." Roger is the first tennis professional ever to have reached the mark of 15 Grand-Slam titles as he broke Pete Sampras' record. Pete followed the epic match in the
stadium today.

It was a hard piece of work for Roger as Andy Roddick pressured him with his strong serve. The two stretched the match all the way and played the longest set in tennis history! Roger was the happy winner today, with Andy surrendering a good loser.

And now Roger regains the world number 1 spot after his glorious victory - way to go!

ATP - RECORD SEVENTH STRAIGHT WIMBLEDON FINAL!

Roger is just one more win away from making tennis history! He advanced to his record seventh straight Wimbledon final today, defeating Tommy Haas 7-6(3), 7-5, 6-3.

"I'm very happy with my performance and it's unbelievable to back into another Wimbledon final," Roger said. "I've had a lot of pressure over all the years, so this is just another great match, great opportunity for me to get into the history books."

Tommy Haas held the pace during the two-plus hour match, but Roger was simply superior. A victory in Sunday's final would give our champ his unprecedented 15th Grand Slam title, which would break a tie with Hall of Famer Pete Sampras. Roger said he would be happy if Pete came to Wimbledon to watch him try to break his record. "He might come around, he might not. It's his choice. I'd love to see him because he's a good friend of mine. Very honored of course that I share the record of 14 with him."

If Roger wins, he will be the third player to win six or more Wimbledon titles. William Renshaw and Sampras both won seven. He will face Great Britain's Andy Murray or American Andy Roddick on Sunday.

ATP - A CONVINCING VICTORY

Roger did very well getting past Ivo Karlovic’s huge serves today to reach the Wimbledon semifinals with a 6-3, 7-5, 7-6 (3) victory. He is now only two more steps from a record 15th Grand Slam title!

"I love the record I have reaching so many semi-finals in grand slams in a row," said Roger. "Twenty-one, it shows how consistent I have been, how injury-free I have been to be able keep it up for such a long time … to play so well this week, I am really excited."

In a match featuring short points and few rallies, Roger conjured up a few great returns to break the 6-foot-10 Croatian twice. He will now face Tommy Haas in Friday’s semifinals. Haas reached his first Wimbledon semifinal by upsetting No. 4 Novak Djokovic 7-5, 7-6 (6), 4-6, 6-3 today.
