Roger Federer is the highest earning international athlete

According to Sports Illustrated, the 16-time Grand Slam champion was the highest-earning international athlete this year, dethroning soccer star David Beckham atop the rankings. Based on winnings, endorsements and appearance fees, Federer is projected to earn over $62 million in 2010, considerably more than the No. 2 international athlete list on the list, Lionel Messi. Federer's total would put him second among all athletes in SI's rankings, still well behind Tiger Woods, but just ahead of Phil Mickelson.

In the 2009 rankings, Federer placed ninth with earnings of close to $30 million. That's the same spot occupied this year by Rafael Nadal. The world No. 1 makes his debut on SI's International list after netting a cool $27 million.

Federer signed new sponsorship deals in 2009 with Credit Suisse and Lindt in addition to his previous relationships with Nike, Rolex, Gillette and Mercedes Benz.

Roger Federer: Quest For Perfection, the updated and re-released book that chronicles the incredible tennis career of Roger Federer, has been officially re-released in paperback by publisher New Chapter Press. The book also appears in English for the first time.

Roger stunned by Tomas Berdych

Roger lost to Tomas Berdych in the quarterfinals at Wimbledon today, the six-time champion’s earliest loss at the All England Club since 2002. He was beaten 4-6, 6-3, 1-6, 4-6 by Berdych, the 12th seed from the Czech Republic.

"It was brutal for me. Every time he had a chance, he took it. If there's anything good about this it's I'm gonna get some rest," summed up Roger, who added he had been troubled by a stiff back and right leg injury.

Roger came in with an 8-2 career record against Berdych, having lost the first match at the 2004 Athens Olympics and the last in Miami this year. He also played his 25th consecutive Grand Slam quarterfinal.

Roger, who has appeared in every Wimbledon final since 2003, lost the first set, 4-6, but rallied back in the second set, which he won 6-3. Berdych looked uncomfortable and Roger hit his groundstrokes shorter. But unfortunately Berdych regained control. The Czech seized the third set 6-1, and got an early break in the fourth set and never yielded control, serving for the set at 5-4.

"I'm looking forward to some rest," Roger said after the match. You certainly deserve it!

Despite his rankings slide, Federer says he believes he still has what it takes to reclaim his top spot in the men's game: "Yeah, I do think that - that's why I'm here," he said.
