Roger returns home to regroup

Roger Federer, who made a surprise quarter-final exit to Jurgen Melzer at the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters on Friday, will now return to Switzerland for a couple of weeks to get physically and mentally fit for the tough stretch ahead.

"I'll be back in Switzerland training on clay. Hopefully the weather is going to be okay so I get some chances to hit outdoors. I'm looking forward to going back home."

World No. 3 Federer dropped to a 24-5 match record on the season, highlighted by one ATP World Tour title at the Qatar ExxonMobil Open in Doha (d. Davydenko).

"It's always disappointing regardless against who you lose," said Federer, a three-time former runner-up to Rafael Nadal at the Monte-Carlo Country Club.

"I wish I could have gone further in the tournament. I got three matches. I'm pretty happy.

"I don't think I played terrible. Obviously, it was still the first week of clay, so I don't expect myself to play my very best. I think it's been a solid tournament.

"I think I should have definitely gotten one of the sets. Every time I had this slight opening, things didn't go my way. I thought he did well. He played aggressive, played the right way he was supposed to."

When asked whether Federer is losing his aura of invincibility, Melzer said: "I think you always have to respect Roger. This would be lack of respect from the players if you don't respect Roger. He's a great tennis player, what he has achieved in the past.

"He has played tennis on such a high level that for him being three in the world is a downgrade, which if you think about it, it's kind of stupid. For me, he's the greatest player that has ever played that game. For him to lose matches, it's every time a tragic. There is a lot of players out there that would love to be in his shirt going out of that locker room and being on the court."

Federer, a winner of 17 ATP World Tour Masters 1000 titles, is No. 7 on the Open Era match wins list (767) in tour-level play. He is next scheduled to play at the Mutua Madrid Open, an ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournament, from 2 May.

Federer keeps pace with title rival Nadal

Roger Federer kept pace with his Spanish title rival as he cruised past Croatian Marin Cilic 6-4, 6-3 on Thursday in the third round of the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters.

The Swiss broke serve once in each set, and saved the only break point he faced, as he surged to victory over the No. 15-seeded Cilic in just 71 minutes. The 22-year-old Cilic, a finalist in Marseille (l. to Soderling) in February, dropped to a 15-8 match record on the season.

"Today was another solid performance, which I'm very happy about," said Federer. "He actually played a solid match except one game in the end of the first set where he made some mistakes unfortunately. Fortunate for me. But I think we were both really solid until that point on the serve. And in the second set, I was able to have one good return game, which was able to surprise him with a few quick returns. I took advantage of that there."

World No. 3 Federer is closing on a fourth final appearance at the Monte-Carlo Country Club, which stages the first ATP World Tour Masters 1000 clay-court tennis tournament of the season. He finished runner-up three times to Nadal from 2006-2008.

The 29-year-old Federer will also look to win a record-equalling 18th ATP World Tour Masters 1000 title this week by triumphing at one of just three such tournaments where he is yet to claim the title; the others being Shanghai, Rome and Paris-Bercy.

Federer next will face either Jurgen Melzer of Austria or Spain’s Nicolas Almagro for a place in the semi-finals.

Perfect start into clay season

Roger defeated Germany's Philipp Kohlschreiber (ATP 32) 6-2, 6-1 in the second round of the 1000-Masters in Monte Carlo today.

"I'm really just getting a feeling again for playing on clay here on Monaco and then obviously the next two weeks when I'm not playing any tournaments it's going to be really important for me to get a sense of how well I'm hitting the ball. I really want to get some good practice in to be in great shape for Madrid and Rome," Roger said after the match.

Our champion had Kohlschreiber running helplessly around center court and wrapped up the victory in just 50 minutes with his fifth ace of the match. Roger broke the German's serve early in both sets to give himself the advantage in each, and rescued the only break point against him with an ace.

Roger's next match will be on Thursday either against Marin Cilic or the winner of the match between Pere Riba and Potito Starace.

Monte Carlo: The Draw

Roger is playing the 1000-Masters in Monte Carlo this week, opening this year's clay season. He will meet Philipp Kohlschreiber (ATP 34) after a first round bye. Roger has won all five matches against the German so far.

Roger, the number 2 seed, could face Austria's Jürgen Melzer (ATP 9) in the quarter-final. A meeting with Spain's David Ferrer (ATP 6) is possible in the semis before the defending champion Rafael Nadal could be up in the final.

After Roger had skipped the tournament last year, he is looking foward to an early start on clay and a great week. In 2009, he was defeated in the round of sixteen by Stanislas Wawrinka, just a few days after Roger's wedding.

Federer: “Clay swing pivotal in battle for No. 1”

The battle to finish year-end World No. 1 in the South African Airways 2011 ATP Rankings is fast turning into a three-horse race between Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer, and the Swiss believes the European clay-court swing could play a pivotal role in separating the three.

It was at this stage last season that Nadal let fly, winning 22 successive matches as he swept the three clay-court ATP World Tour Masters 1000s and Roland Garros, before going on to win Wimbledon and the US Open over the summer. Should the Spaniard do the same again, Federer pointed out, it would be quite the task for someone to wrest the No. 1 ranking from his grip.

"I guess it depends a lot on Rafa," said Federer on Sunday at the Monte-Carlo Country Club, where he will contest the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters next week. "If he's able to defend everything he did last year, it's going to be tough for anybody because then he has three straight Masters 1000s and the French Open in the bag as well. He had super solid results at the end of the season as well, winning the [US] Open, so forth. It all depends a little bit on Rafa."

Federer was absent from Monte-Carlo last year, suffering from the after-effects of pneumonia, and struggled for consistency on the clay on his return, reaching the final in Madrid, but falling in the quarter-finals at Roland Garros and the second round in Rome. With points aplenty to pick up over the next four months, Federer is hopeful he can make significant strides.

"I feel very strong on the surface. It's the surface I grew up on. Everybody knows that by now. I can make a huge step forward," said the Basel native. "In my situation, if I can go really deep here in Monaco, and also in Rome and so forth, then clearly I don't have much to defend at the French [Open] and Wimbledon. I'll have some opportunities as well, especially when the slams roll around.

"I think there's a lot to play for us in the next three, four months. Sure, I know Rafa has a lot of pressure, but I don't think that matters that much for him, especially on this surface. He's so confident, he's so good; I definitely could see him doing it again. But there are other guys that have something to say. I hope I'm one of those guys."

World No. 2 Djokovic has been forward to withdraw from Monte-Carlo with a knee injury, putting on hold his 26-match winning streak, and will return to action on home soil in Belgrade in two weeks. Federer, along with the rest of the tennis world, will be watching with interest to see if the Serbian can maintain his rich vein of form on the clay.

"Right now it's clicking for him. I think it's great for the game that he's managed to play so well and go on a streak. But Rafa's had streaks in the past, [Andy] Murray has had streaks, I've had streaks. It's good when that happens. It focuses on something very positive in the game. It's going to be interesting to see how long he can keep it up and stay mentally and physically strong because he's had a long end to the year last year and he started really strong this year."

Federer and Nadal will get a head start on Djokovic on the clay when they compete at the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters. The 29-year-old Federer is bidding to win the coveted title for the first time, after three runner-up efforts from 2006-2008. He will open his campaign against Germany’s Philipp Kohlschreiber.

A clear loss against Rafa

Roger suffered a clear 3-6, 2-6 loss against Rafael Nadal in the semi-final of the Sony Ericsson Open in Key Biscayne.

"It just got worse and worse. And when I had a chance I simply played too weak. Today was nothing to write about, I'm afraid," Roger commented. "I know that I can do many more things in the game. I'm very excited by what's to come still."

“I had a few mini chances, which against Rafa I was down right away,” said Federer. “From then it was an uphill battle. When I did have chances I played poorly and he came up with some good stuff. Off night for me, unfortunately.”

It was no easy task playing against a very strong Nadal as the Spaniard never dropped his serve and converted four of five break-point chances, committing only 10 unforced errors. Roger counted a total of 31 unforced errors and shanked several shots.

Next on Roger's schedule is the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters which starts in a week and opens the clay-season for Roger.
