Nadal and Marc Lopez will look to continue their title defence when they challenge Federer and his Swiss partner Stanislas Wawrinka ahead of the evening session at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.
Nadal has a 2-0 lead over Federer in doubles matches. Nadal partnered Tommy Robredo to a 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 win over Yves Allegro and Federer in the 2004 second round. While Nadal and Carlos Moya beat Federer and Wawrinka 6-4, 7-6(5) in the 2007 Internazionali BNL d'Italia first round in Rome.
Federer and Wawrinka progressed to the Indian Wells semi-finals on Thursday after they converted four of five break point opportunities to beat Mark Knowles and Michal Mertinak 6-1, 7-5 in 65 minutes.
